Key ingredients
| Ingredient | What it is, and what it is used for |

| Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride | Medium-chain triglyceride from coconut. Used to soften by filling the gaps between surface cells. |

| Glycerin | Polyol. A material skin already contains, so it reads as its own; used to pull in water and hold it. |
| Butylene Glycol | Diol. Used to pull in water and hold it; dissolves the rest so the formula stays one liquid. |
| Pentylene Glycol | Diol. Dissolves the rest so the formula stays one liquid; used to pull in water and hold it. |
| Betaine | Amino acid derivative from sugar beet. Used to pull in water and hold it. |
| Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract | Extract of Camellia sinensis leaf (green tea). Used to slow oxidation, in the formula and on skin; used to calm irritation. |
| Cetearyl Alcohol | Fatty alcohol blend (C16-C18). Used to soften by filling the gaps between surface cells; sets how thick it is; keeps oil and water from separating. |
| Carbomer | Cross-linked polyacrylic acid. Sets how thick it is; stops the mix separating over time. |
| Xanthan Gum | Fermentation-derived polysaccharide. Sets how thick it is; stops the mix separating over time. |
How the formula works together
Three groups of ingredients are doing the work here. Humectants — Glycerin, Butylene Glycol and Pentylene Glycol among others — draw water into the surface. Calming ingredients — Centella Asiatica Extract and Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract — work on the look of redness. Emollients and lipids — Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride and Cetearyl Alcohol — sit on top and slow how fast that water leaves.
Humectants and emollients and lipids are the pairing that matters here: water pulled in by one, held there by the other. That is the difference between skin that feels comfortable an hour after application and skin that feels comfortable at bedtime.
